Tips For Providing Good Parrot Care
Pet parrot care is a huge responsibility. If you do not have the energy to devote to the necessary tasks every day, then you really should consider choosing another kind of pet.
The most important aspect of parrot care is making sure you provide the proper living conditions. The right size cage is critical and it must be large enough so that your parrot can stretch out his wings full span without them touching the bars of the cage. This means you will have to invest in a large cage, especially if your parrot is very large.
Lining the bottom of the cage is important and the paper must be changed every day. failing to clean the bottom of the cage every day could result in a very sick parrot due to bacteria building up from urine and feces that will build up in the bottom of the cage. Parrots cages can become very untidy but getting into the habit of daily cleaning in and around the cage is important.
Providing a healthy parrot diet is imperative also. You should make sure to give him plenty of variety in his diet which should include fruits, meats, vegetables, and some specialty treats that you can find at the pet store. He should always have a supple of fresh water as well. If you don’t know what to feed your bird, your local pet store should be able to advise you. It is actually a myth that parrots eat only seeds – they require a diverse range of foods in order to get all their nutritional requirements.
Parrots need socialization in order to thrive. You will need to make sure that he does not remain in his cage for extended periods of time without being able to come out. Parrots are amazingly clever creatures. Keeping them caged will cause feelings of resentment towards you and could cause him to become nasty and mean towards you when you do decide to have social contact in letting him out. You bird needs to interact with you and your family every day – you are now part of his “flock”.
Giving your bird a little bath weekly is essential to keep down mites and other parasites. In nature, you can find parrots bathing in shallow water so they can have the protection they need for their skin. Place a big tub of water in an area that you can put blankets or towels down on and let him bathe in the water. Some parrots like to bathe in the shower or kitchen sink. You will be amazed at how much he will enjoy this. Do not use soap or anything else in the water though as soaps can be too harsh for your bird.
Having a pet parrot can be a lot of fun. But you must remember that they are quit a bit of work and they can be very noisy as well. A lot of people cannot tolerate this screeching because it is so ear piercing and loud but if you provide proper parrot care, the screeching will be minimal. Having said that, you need to be aware that it is normal for your parrot to make noises – birds are very vocal creatures!
The bottom line is that you need to consider all the aspects of parrot care and what it means to own a parrot before you adopt one. If you are willing to do what it takes to bring a parrot into your flock, you will be justly rewarded.
